The earliest skin grafts in Canada (part 5)

On January 17, two small patches of skin were obtained from the arm, between half a pea and a pea in size, and grafted onto the granulations of the ulcer. The patient developed erysipelas 10 days later, but did not lose the grafts. On February 14, the area round the grafts, which had been peripherally placed, was healed, but not the central portion. Two more small grafts were taken from the arm and one of these survived. On March 11, an unhealed area of 1 by X inches was grafted and the area was healed within a week.
One other stasis ulcer patient and two burn patients were also presented by Dr Palmer Howard. Like Dr Hingston, he felt that healthy granulations were favourable if not essential to grafting success. In the first of his burn patients only one of 10 grafts took, which he felt was due to the fact that the granulations were weak, flabby and bled excessively when touched. In the ensuing discussion it was determined that in most of the cases, where tested, the sensation of the grafts was poor.

Dr Pal mer How ard pre sented the four patients as his cases. Since he was a physician and not a surgeon, one cannot be certain whether he himself took the grafts or had a surgeon on the staff of the hospital perform the procedures.
